Amongst the PR hoopla of the K850i launch, the Sony Ericsson K770i almost went unnoticed. Although it does not have the flashy megapixel power of the K850i, the K770i excels in a much different way. The K770i comes in several colour variations and its features are packed within a plastic body which manages to look a great deal more refined than other handsets made from this material. Obviously the handset is dominated by the 1.9” TFT display, which delivers a superb picture, but positioned below this is the keypad. For the K770i Sony Ericsson has ditched the much maligned joystick in favour of a directional pad which has come straight from the T650. The pad is easy to use, responsive and has a feel of solid feedback but the real triumph on the front panel is the keypad. The keys are large and highly responsive which makes texting feel seamless and accidental button presses are virtually unheard of. It’s good to see that Sony Ericsson has taken a step back from the cramped button styling present on so many handsets (their designs included!)

Beyond the great construction of the K770i, it’s good to see that it has a very respectable roster of features. The K770i has 16MB of internal memory that is augmented by the inclusion of a memory stick micro M2 memory card slot. Included within the box is a 256MB memory card to get you started, which you could be filled with tracks thanks the excellent MP3 player. The media player software will be familiar to anyone who has used a K800i as it is powered by the same Walkman 1.0 software. In fact the K770i can sound as good as any walkman phone, even without the MegaBass preset. It even includes an FM radio, to amuse you should you get bored of your music.

Like the K810i and K800i the K770i features a 3.2 megapixel cyber shot camera. An LED flash is included for coping with tricky light conditions. The software gives you all the options that you would expect to get on a cyber-shot handset, although BestPic is conspicuous by its absence. The burst shot mode makes up for this omission though as it is fairly similar. Fortunately the K770i is just as capable as its illustrious predecessors in the camera department and although it is overshadowed somewhat by the K850i's whopping five megapixels, the K770i camera does all the jobs you want a camera to do.

The Sony Ericsson K770i has an impressive array of features and everything you'd expect from a top line Sony Ericsson handset. Add 3G compatibility to this list and you have all the ingredients a winning handset needs. The user interface seems a little bit old now and the lack of a xenon flash on the camera impacts image quality but on the whole this phone will appeal to most users. This purple edition is available exclusively from three mobile.
