While it is not at the very cutting edge of mobile phone technology, it is a solid and reliable handset that will cater for the vast majority of users who aren't obsessed with taking pixel-perfect shots and having the fastest net access.

Our Review of the Nokia 6124 Classic

The Nokia 6124 Classic, exclusive to Vodafone, takes stylistic cues from many of Nokia's recent mid range handsetsThe Nokia 6124 Classic, exclusive to Vodafone, takes stylistic cues from many of Nokia's recent mid range handsets. You can see elements of the 6300, the old 6120 classic from last year as well as the very popular 6500. The Quad Band 6124 weighs in with a sharp 2" TFT display, that is clear and legible in most lighting conditions as well as an easy to use directional key and two touch sensitive menu soft keys beneath the display.

Despite coming in a traditional candybar design and a chassis which bears hallmarks of its Nokia ancestors, the 6124 Classic has a number of decent technical features to distinguish it from the rest of the herd. It's an HSDPA enabled smart phone that is fully geared up for mobile web browsing, which is better than you'd think on a 2.0" display.

Thanks to HSDPA most pages shouldn't prove to be much of a problem, but obviously this depends on signal strength in your area. The omnipresent 2 Megapixel camera also makes an appearance, but it comes with a good flash, and is activated by a dedicated camera key, which elevates the 6124 Classic above the rest of the 2 Megapixel crowd (and it is definitely a crowd!). The 6124 also features a front-mounted second camera for 3G video calls.

The 6124 Classic also has a very capable multimedia player that supports the majority of the popular file formats, such as MP3, MP4, eAAC+ and WMA formats. The 6124 also comes complete with both Bluetooth and USB compatibility for file transfers, built-in FM radio and a microSD card slot that is upgradeable up to an impressive 8GB – this is in addition to the 35MB of memory which comes built in to the phone. Talk time is just over 3 hours, and the 6124 can manage over 200 hours in standby mode. It is to be expected that some of the apps – browsing in particular – put a strain on the battery.

The Nokia 6124 Classic comes with a very capable music player that supports the majority of the popular file formatsThe user interface software that the Nokia 6124 Classic is based on the now very familiar S60 and Symbian systems. This basically means that anyone who has used a Nokia before will feel right at home as soon as they switch the 6124 on. This also means that you can download additional software and content to your phone, adding stuff such as wallpaper, MP3 tones for ringtones and message alerts, games and other apps, enough to keep your average technical user happy. The browser software is also capable of running several applications at the same time, so you can listen to your favourite tunes whilst updating your Facebook status.

All in all, the Nokia 6124 Classic is exactly that – a traditional design inspired by popular handsets of the past with an inventory of decent, well integrated features.

 Pros

HSDPA compatible.
Music player supports all the main formats.

 Cons

Plain, uninspiring design.
