Overview Specifications Pros Vs Cons
The Sony Ericsson W890i is the latest addition to the walkman family tree. It must be said the W890i is more of a reinvention of its predecessor the W880i. Visually, you can see the similarities. The W890i is a super slim candybar phone with a similar size screen. However the small buttons that made an appearance on the W880i have had a slight redesign on the W890i. The W890i features a more traditional keypad style that is reminiscent of the old K800i. The 256K TFT display is similar to the W880i but it measures around 2” diagonally as opposed to the 1.8” display on the older handset.

The navigation keys are located below the display and they are placed in circular patterns, which seem to be a new motif for the Walkman handsets. The dedicated ‘call’ and ‘call end’ keys have a golden finish and are located on the left and right hand edge of the handset. They are slightly elevated from the rest of the centrally located keys so accidental button presses are not an issue. The d-pad has a confirming key that also doubles as a walkman shortcut key. It’s this attention to detail that has made Sony Ericsson such a massive player in the global mobile phone market and the key saves several time consuming button presses.

Aside from the minor cosmetic changes, the W890i is HSDPA compatible. This means tracks can be downloaded from the internet at near home broadband speeds. 26MB of internal memory is available alongside the 2GB memory card that is provided in the box. Although this won't trouble the iPhone or the N95 8GB, it should be more than enough to store some of your favourite tracks. The W890i has the Walkman 3.0 media player software installed and it is very easy to use. The software supports all of the major file formats such as MP3 and WMA files and navigating your way around your favourite tricks is a breeze.

With the W890i you can even subscribe to music and video podcasts. These can be transferred to your phone via the easy to use Sony Ericsson media management software. The software bundled with Sony Ericsson phones has been consistently user friendly and the new version is not an exception.

The W890i is a good step up from the W880i and Sony Ericsson will be hoping that they have a hit on their hands. This is a great handset and you won't be disappointed.
