People buy up-to-the-minute mobile phones in the belief that they reflect their personal style and demonstrate their familiarity with the latest advances in technology, according to BT.
Ian Neild, a futurologist at BT, said people buy handsets because they can access the internet, take pictures and play music, not just because they can make calls.
BT's 21st Century Life Index consumer research report shows one in six Brit aged between 16 and 35 admit to being jealous of friends or relatives who always have the most up-to-date gadgets.
"When was the last time you bought a mobile phone because of the phone? Normally, it's because of what they've got," he said.
"It's the marketing of them - it makes you look at your phone and it's about what can make you change your mobile phone."
BT's report also reveals that six in ten people say new technology has improved their quality of life.
