LG launches London design centre

By (Thursday, 26th June 2008)

Mobile phone manufacturer LG has opened a new design studio in London this week.

According to Design Week, the South Korea-based firm will produce its first European-developed handset at the Covent Garden centre this year and aims to have 22 design experts installed on the site by 2009.

The London studio replaces LG's previous European design headquarters in Milan and will also be used to develop TV systems and other home electronics products.

"For LG to grow its market presence in Europe it must invest in and be sensitive to the consumer's requirements, while responding to technical and cultural differences," said James Kim, president of LG Electronics Europe.

About 19 per cent of LG's global revenue is currently generated in Europe, according to vnunet.com, with the company planning to significantly increase investment in the continent over the next two years.

Headquartered in Seoul, LG recently overtook Sony Ericsson to become the world's fourth largest mobile handset manufacturer with a market share of eight per cent.
