LG unveils low-cost touchscreen handset

A new phone set to be launched in Europe this month will help to make touchscreen technology affordable to ordinary consumers, according to its manufacturer LG.

The Korean company was the first to release a full touchcreen handset with the million-selling Prada Phone by LG in March 2007, but most of the mobile phones with similar technology that have followed have carried big price tags.

It is now hoping to find mass market popularity with the LG KP500 by keeping the purchase price low. Although that all important figure is being kept under wraps at present.

Dr Skott Ahn, president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications, said the company's research had revealed sizeable global demand for a touchscreen phone aimed at consumers.

"We want to reach out to this group and LG KP500 is our answer to deliver a high-quality full touchscreen phone that is easy to use and much easier to afford," Dr Ahn added.

In addition to a low price, LG is promising plenty of features on the new handset.

Among those confirmed are a three-inch screen, virtual qwerty keyboard, motion-sensitive games and an embedded stylus pen, which will enable users to write memos and edit photos.

The slimline LG KP500 will also come with a specially designed user interface, which Dr Ahn claimed would "keep the tactile operations smooth and simple which is necessary when you’re opening up a new technology to a wide group of people".

LG's latest handset is likely to face strong competition from the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic and Samsung Pixon, which will reach UK shops on October 2nd and November 1st respectively.
