Additional camera functions 'could attract customers'

Mobile phone buyers are likely to look for extra features in their camera phones when considering which one to purchase, it has been claimed.

According to Thomas Newton of Mobile-Phones.co.uk. phones will eventually reach a ceiling with the megapixel count that can be offered on handsets.

This means that resolution will no longer be the determining factor when considering a camera phone purhase.

Mr Newton states that features such as autofocus and ambient light-responsive flash-tools will be crucial in the mobile phone technology race.

He commented: "The megapixel arms race can only go so far before the resolution becomes so high that the difference as far as high street consumers are concerned will be negligible"

Consequently, the determining factors will soon become features that help people to take better features.

Samsung recently unveiled the M8800 Pixon which has an eight-megapixel camera built into it. This has prompted some to question whether it is a phone with a camera or a camera with a phone.

A recent survey posted on Mobile-Phones.co.uk found that photo-taking capability was the most important secondary function in a phone.

Over 70 per cent of customers voted this way, prompting Mr Newton to point to the Nokia N95, which boasts a five-megapixel camera, as evidence of this feeling among consumers.

It features an X16 digital zoom, an auto-focus, fast-shutter, face detection and geo-tagging.

Despite this, it does not have Wi-Fi, although it does support Bluetooth accessories and has a GPS receiver.

It is retailing at £400 and will be released in November.
