Many Apple iPhone's which have been 'unlocked' by their users are being rendered useless by a new software update released by the US firm.
Apple had advised customers that hacking into the device to enable compatibility with other mobile networks could cause problems - a warning which seems to have been confirmed by the latest development.
Statements from iPhone owners have appeared on several technology blogs stating that their unlocked phone has become unusable because of the update, which has removed many of the applications from the device and, in some cases, produced an error screen which cannot be escaped, vnunet.com reports.
Commenting on the development, Ben Wood of research firm CCS Insight suggested that Apple's marketing strategy for the iPhone had almost seemed to invite hacking attempts, the BBC reports.
"It set the challenge that the iPhone was unbreakable and the temptation was too much. A small army of hackers started work on this project as soon as it was launched," he said.
Apple chief Steve Jobs admitted that his company is involved in a "game of cat and mouse" with hackers at the recent UK unveiling of the iPhone.
The product will be available to British customers from November 9th.
