Asda reports mobile success

By Editorial Team (Wednesday, 23rd January 2008)

The sale of the Sony Ericsson K850i and the Samsung E250 in supermarket Asda has proved a success, with the company reportedly reaching 100,000 active customers by Christmas.

Asda has also been offering the Sony Ericsson W200i for £38, including free speakers, which undercuts rivals Tesco Mobile and Carphone Warehouse by over £10, according to Mobile News International.

Head of mobile at Asda Ted Cadogan told the publication: "Christmas was an extremely exciting time and gaining 100,000 active customers before the end of 2007 made it all the more special."

The supermarket sells both contract and pay as you go, with its own pay as you go service offering calls from eight pence per minute.

In March 2007, Vodafone struck up a deal with Asda to allow the sale of branded mobile phones, after Tesco's arrangement with O2 which allows the supermarket to rent airtime on the O2 network.

Asda is owned by American supermarket giant Wal-Mart.
