Asda has unveiled new price plans for its pay as you go (PAYG) mobile phone services.
Call costs for PAYG customers have been cut to 8 pence a minute, with texts priced at 4p, compared to rates from Orange and T-Mobile of 15p a minute for calls and 10p per text.
The supermarket claims that the new pricing scheme will save UK consumers £2.38 billion a year.
Darren Blackhurst, trading director for the supermarket, stated that the company is offering the "cheapest mobile phone call plan in the UK".
Meanwhile, Vodafone has this week revealed it will be raising its call costs.
The mobile phone giant plans to charge PAYG users 20p a minute for calls, a 5p rise on their current rate.
Customers who exceed their monthly usage limits will pay 15p a minute for calls, rather than the current fee of 12p a minute.
Both T-Mobile and O2 also increased the price of their calls during July.
