Cameras are the deciding factor in the mobile phone war, according to an expert in the sector.
Ben Wood, analyst at CSS Insight, predicts that phones with ten and 12 megapixel technology will hit the market within 12 months, reports the Times.
He believes that firms that manufacture standalone cameras will soon begin to struggle to compete with phones with high quality photo-taking capabilities.
Mr Wood commented: "Now camera phones are competing head-on with entry level digital still cameras."
The analyst added: "My expectation is that it wont be long before we start comparing camera phones with real cameras."
As Christmas is a major selling time for mobile phone companies, it is thought that the makers of the devices will try to make up for sluggish sales so far this year.
For the first time, mobile owners will be able to download extracts from novels shortlisted for this year's Booker Prize.
