Cameras 'are key to mobile phone sales'

Cameras 'are key to mobile phone sales'

A recent study has concluded that cameras are the add-ons that most consumers look for when purchasing a mobile phone.

According to Strategy Analytics Wireless Device Lab, a high-quality camera is more likely to encourage buyers to spend more money on a phone than any other feature, reports Cellular News.

Related technologies, such as a video camera and removable memory cards, were also found to be important concerns for those looking to purchase a handset.

Chris Schreiner, senior user experience analyst at Strategy Analytics, said: "Strategy Analytics research shows that over 60 per cent of all respondents would be willing to pay extra for a quality camera on their mobile device."

He added that the desire for this feature could be found across all age ranges throughout the US and western Europe.

Kevin Nolan, vice president of the firm's user experience practice, said that technologies of this sort are 'becoming table stakes" when people shop for a new handset.

This comes after the release of Sony Ericsson's C905 phone, with an 8.1-megapixel camera, helped to push the firm to the top of the sales rankings.

It replaced Samsung at the number one spot, increasing its branded market share by three per cent, to 28.7 per cent.

LG also released an eight-megapixel camera phone recently in the form of the LG Renoir.

This handset features a new widescreen display, which ITWorld.com claims is "perfect for taking portrait pictures".

It has face and smile recognition capabilities and is the thinnest mobile phone with an eight-megapixel camera built in.
