China Mobile to expand 3G

China Mobile to expand 3G

By Editorial Team (Wednesday, 27th August 2008)

China Mobile has announced that it will be conducting commercial trials of 3G in 38 cities by June 2009.

The chairman of the mobile phone company's parent firm Wang Jianzhou said the company has already set up networks in eight cities and has purchased networks in a further two, reports AFX News.

This move was part of the first stage of its expansion and cost 15 billion yuan (£1.2 billion).

Mr Jianzhou refused to provide estimates as to the cost of the second phase, stating that the purchase of equipment had not even started yet.

A further 28 cities will be targeted in this stage of the development which the company stated is likely to begin at some point in October this year.

In related news, China Mobile recently stated that its takeover of 3G could provide a win-win situation despite the "great social responsibilities" involved in developing the firm.
