The international market for mobile phone sales is healthy, it has emerged.
According to the results of a study by analyst firm IDC, during the third quarter of this year vendors have been able to sell a total of 289.1 million units worldwide, with growth facilitated in part by the sale of high specification handsets to established markets.
In less developed markets, growth has been generated by lower-cost mobile handsets, reports VNUNet.com.
"The worldwide mobile phone market continued to post positive results in the third quarter, even as vendors struggled to balance revenue and profitability," said Ramon Llamas, a research analyst at the mobile devices technology and trends team at IDC.
"The leading vendors have been successful at balancing features and price for the distinct markets in a highly competitive space," he added.
Compared with the same period in 2006, global shipments have increased by a total of 13.8 per cent and are up nine per cent when compared with the second quarter of 2007.
IDC was established in 1964.
