Google phone system "on schedule"

Google phone system "on schedule"

By Editorial Team (Tuesday, 24th June 2008)

Google has responded to reports that its mobile phone system, Android, will not reach consumers until the end of the year by claiming that developments are on track.

Phones featuring the Android software will be sold in the second half of 2008, reports the Independent.

A Google spokesperson said: "We are on schedule and we're very excited to see the momentum continuing to build behind the Android platform among carriers, manufacturers, developers and consumers."

Mobile phone users may see the software appearing on a number of handsets as it is being released as open source software - which makes it free to use - although Google has been working with 30 companies to release specially designed products this year.

In May, the Telegraph reported that previews of the phone revealed it included services such as map software, a compass and email, which could place it in competition with the iPhone.
