Taking advantage of mobile phone banking services is one way to make managing money simpler, according to an industry expert.
Most high street banks have provided some form of mobile banking for some time, with customers able to sign up to a service that provides a weekly balance via text message.
Alliance & Leicester has now gone a step further by offering people the chance to receive warning texts if their account balance drops too low.
Ian Tandy, the bank's director of e-commerce, said that as most people do not go anywhere without their mobile, it makes sense to use the gadget to take care of everyday tasks.
"People can now find out that their wages have gone in, or easily check that they have enough money to cover their proposed weekend activities. Life and finances will be so much easier," Mr Tandy added.
Credit card company Visa recently announced that it is to pilot a mobile service which would allow customers to receive near real-time notifications via SMS or mobile email.
