The popular Apple iPhone is helping to encourage the development of mobile gaming, according to new figures.
A report from media analyst Screen Digest reveals that the top four game publishers are continuing to have a strong commitment to the sector, as consumers opt for phones that have touch screens - ideal for mobile games.
Last month, a total of ten million applications were downloaded via Apple's online store in a three-day period following the new 3G version of the iPhone hitting the shops.
However, there are concerns that the games available are not advanced enough to guarantee long-term popularity with users.
Ronan de Renesse, senior mobile analyst at Screen Digest, explained: "Whilst the current demand for games that can be played on the iPhone is giving the mobile gaming industry a much needed boost, there are a number of issues that will need to be addressed by games developers."
He added that the release of major titles in mobile versions suitable for the iPhone could help to ensure a new audience of gamers and a wider market in the long term.
