More people in Europe are opting to use their mobile phones over their home land line, according to new research.
The study by telecoms advisers at Analysys found that more voice calls are being made via mobiles than through broadband and fixed lines combined in five European countries, with Finland leading the way.
Report co-author Dr Alastair Brydon said that if current levels of swapping between fixed lines and mobiles continue, 90 per cent of all voice calls in Finland will be made via mobile phones by next year.
"In many markets it looks as if fixed voice is going to suffer not the slow and lingering decline many have predicted, but a rather rapid one," he commented.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics indicate that 79 per cent of UK households own a mobile phone, with 56 per cent of those in the lowest income category doing so.
