A new iPhone is under development by Apple, it has been claimed.
According to comments made by Randall Stephenson, chief executive officer of telecommunications firm AT&T, Apple is currently developing a faster version of its iconic mobile handset.
When released, Mr Stephenson has claimed the new device will be able to access the internet at speeds greater than are currently possible with the iPhone.
A release date has not been provided for the third generation device.
"You'll have it next year," said Mr Stephenson.
"[The iPhone] has such usability and functionality built into it, you can make a little money selling the handset and you can share the [subscription] revenue stream with the handset maker," he added.
At present, the iPhone is designed as a quad-band GSM handset, with support for GPRS and Edge.
