Budget airline Ryanair is to trial a system that will allow passengers to use their mobile phones on flights.
If successful, inflight mobile phone calls could be being made by travellers sometime in January or February.
Earlier this year, the European commission and regulator Ofcom gave the green light to the use of mobile phones on aircraft.
There are also reports that Air France, Bmi and Emirates are testing their own systems.
Ryanair's Michael O'Leary said passengers will be subject to normal roaming fees rather than excessive company charges.
According to a survey by holiday company TripAdvisor, 86 per cent of Brits are not in favour of mobile phones on aircraft. Worldwide, the figure drops to 78 per cent.
TripAdvisor European communications manager Ian Rumgay said: "The lure of additional revenues from mobile call charges may prove too big a temptation for cash-strapped carriers."
