In 18 months' time, the European Space Agency (ESA) will launch an S-band enabled W2A satellite to bring multimedia communications to mobile phones, it has been announced.
The proposed system will use a mixture of satellites and Earth-based repeaters to ensure that phones can still receive signals when inside buildings, ComputerWeekly.com reports.
S-band covers the spectrum from 2 to 4 Ghz and produces frequencies optimised for the wireless distribution of video and other services to mobile devices, including phones, laptop computers and personal digital assistants.
According to ESA, the system is ideal for the mass market because it will integrate into modern mobile phone designs at a very low cost.
High-power satellites are beneficial to the mobile market because they have the ability to reach large coverage areas and huge numbers of users when broadcasting, according to Cellular-News.com.
It is thought that many content providers using terrestrially-based networks will be interested in the development of mobile video services through satellites as an alternative, due to the enhanced coverage it provides.
