Short Message Service (SMS) will account for 83 per cent of all messaging revenues by 2013, it has been claimed.
A new report from ABI Research has shown that SMS will generate revenues of £89 billion in that year.
This is despite the proliferation of new communication methods being utilised by internet-enabled smartphones.
Dan Shey, analyst at ABI Research, said innovative businesses are examining opportunities to expand mobile messaging access to web sites.
Moreover, they are looking at ways of streaming content and ads to handsets.
However, the success of internet and advertising SMS will depend on location, according to Mr Shey.
Latin Americans, for example, are heavy SMS users and prefer pay-as-you-go for all messaging services.
"To be successful with these enhanced services, companies that supply mobile messaging products and services must understand the regional distributions for customer type, payment preferences, message delivery method, and usage," he stated.
ABI Research was founded in 1990 to help wireless semiconductor manufacturers to understand new markets.
