Tiscali to offer mobile phone services

By Editorial Team (Tuesday, 31st July 2007)

Telecommunications firm Tiscali has announced that it will provide mobile phone services in its country of birth Italy, fuelling speculation that it may make a similar move in the UK.

According to the Times, the company has brokered a deal with Telecom Italia to provide mobile services.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for Tiscali told the publication that it was a possibility that such services could also be offered in the UK.

Last year, chief executive of the firm's UK division Mary Turner said that there had been talks between Tiscali and various mobile phone service providers which could lead the firm to become a quadruple play host along with Virgin Media, offering broadband, mobile, landline and television services.

However, the publication cites analysts as believing the firm's hopes of competition with bigger companies such as BSkyB could be slim.

Earlier this month Bloomberg announced that Tiscali was planning to raise as much as £135 million to help pay for its planned purchase of a UK broadband company.
