Mobile phone users have been urged to recycle old handsets that they no longer use.
According to a survey by Nokia, the majority of consumers still have old devices lying around at home that they no longer want.
Indeed, figures show that only three per cent of people recycle their mobile phones, while most are unaware that recycling them is even possible.
Therefore, the company has highlighted the possible benefits of pulling out old handsets and handing them in to be reused.
Markus Terho, director of environmental affairs at Nokia, commented: "If each of the three billion people globally owning mobiles brought back just one unused device we could save 240,000 tonnes of raw materials."
He added that this would also help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases which enter the atmosphere, thereby helping to tackle climate change.
Charities such as Oxfam are among those groups who collect mobile phones for recycling, along with items such as iPods, digital cameras and inkjet cartridges.
