Phone manufacturer Nokia has purchased the social networking start-up Plazes, as part of its development of mobile internet services.
The news, reported by Reuters, could mean that Nokia phones will soon feature tools to help customers stay in touch by planning and sharing events with a service that can pinpoint their location.
Head of Nokia's internet service Niklas Savander explained: "This acquisition helps Nokia to accelerate its vision of bringing people and places closer together, in line with our broader services strategy."
Plazes is a Berlin-based company which has developed software allowing customers to announce an event and then invite others, while friends can see their current location.
It is currently being used by football fans organising activities and viewings of the Euro 2008 football tournament in Austria and Switzerland, as the service works and has been taken up around Europe.
