About 150 people were waiting outside Apple's flagship store in Regent Street, London last Friday for the 08:00 BST launch of the new iPhone.
But seven hours later, Apple was forced to call in the police to help close the store after it struggled to cope with demand and some technical glitches.
Network operator O2's online stores has already sold out and supplies are restricted in its high street shops.
In fact, O2 has warned that supply issues mean numbers will be limited for several weeks but customers can expect to have one by the end of the summer.
The phone is free on O2's £45 and £75 tariffs. Customers who choose the £35 or £30 tariff can expect to pay £90 for the gadget.
For the time being, sales at O2 outlets will be limited to two for corporate customers and one for regular consumers.
The new phone includes 3G, built-in GPS technology and iPhone version 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
