O2 has revealed that its online shop sold out of the iPhone 3G within hours of Apple's latest gadget going on sale on Monday.
Demand from consumers attempting to pre-order the new smartphone before its official release on July 11th was so high that it caused O2's website to crash.
Ronan Dunne, O2's UK chief executive, said: "We've never seen any mobile device create the excitement and demand of the iPhone 3G."
He added that his company would be working closely with Apple to ensure that there is sufficient supply of the product in the UK over the summer.
The Carphone Warehouse also reported high levels of interest in the iPhone 3G after beginning to accept orders on Monday.
A statement from the retailer said that demand for Apple's new phone is ten times higher than levels experienced at the time of the original iPhone's launch.
