Avaya, the mobile phone software developer, has launched a new download for the iPhone which optimises workplace compatibility.
The client software, one-X Mobile, works in businesses that have installed a virtual private network (VPN) by plugging into the system and using the same number, thus removing the need for a separate office phone.
VPNs are used in around 70 per cent of businesses to cut call costs, although there have been concerns that using private phones in the network could have an impact on security.
One-X Mobile, also works with other mobile manufacturers such as Nokia, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and Samsung.
However, O2 warned in November that businesses may not allow the iPhone to be used as a business phone as it is currently only available on a consumer tariff.
This month Raketu Communications announced the launch of its VoIP application, which allows low-cost international calls from the iPhone.
