No UK recall for iPhone adapter

Apple iPhone owners who purchased their device in the UK are unaffected by the manufacturer's latest product recall.

The California-based company has announced that customers who own an Apple Ultracompact USB Power Adapter should return it.

A problem has been detected with the product, which means that in some circumstances the adapter's metal prongs may snap off in a power outlet, leading to an increased risk of electric shock.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the fault, but the company has decided to act anyway.

Apple has now advised customers who purchased an iPhone or iPhone 3G in the US, Canada, Mexico, Latin America or Japan to stop using the adapter immediately and return it to the supplier, who will replace it with a modified version free of charge.

However, the manufacturer has made it clear that adapters supplied in the UK and the rest of Europe are not affected by the problem.

Meanwhile, internet security business Sophos has warned that cybercriminals have begun using a popular iPhone game as cover.

Writing in his blog, Sophos security expert Graham Cluley explained that hackers have been sending out spam emails claiming to have versions of a platform game called Penguin Panic attached.

However, the attachments actually contain a Trojan horse.

The Trojan will only run on Windows PCs, which means that mobile users are not at risk, but Mr Cluley warned: "Hackers, it seems, are jumping on the bandwagon of the iPhone phenomenon and using it as a springboard to infect innocent users.

"Some people might have played Penguin Panic on their Apple iPhone or another portable device, and be keen to have it on the desktop of their Windows work PC too."
