Samsung will release a new handset to function as a direct challenger to the 3G iPhone, it has emerged.
With the updated version of Apple's flagship touchscreen device announced this week, Samsung has revealed details of its own new top-end smartphone, the Omnia i900.
Described as a "would-be iPhone killer" by vnunet.com, the device uses the Windows Mobile interface and features a 3.2-inch WVGA screen with a five megapixel camera.
The Omnia will be available in 8GB and 16GB versions and is set to be officially unveiled at the CommunicAsia event in Singapore next week. The handset should be available to British consumers in July.
Earlier this week, a representative of Nokia predicted that the launch of the 3G iPhone will boost the market for multimedia handsets in general.
Anssi Vanjoki, senior vice-president of markets at the Finnish company, said that Apple's product is fuelling interest in similar "converged devices".
