Samsung is continuing to maintain its position as the world's number two handset vendor, according to IDC's Worldwide Mobile Phone Tracker.
Year-on-year growth of 22 per cent was "quite strong", says IDC, even though it was down slightly from the previous quarter.
Samsung's performance was affected by increased competition for mid-range and high-end phones and the global economic slowdown.
The mobile phone manufacturer also incurred a rise in marketing spend, which had the effect of squeezing operating margins.
"This, however, did not prevent the company from enjoying success with its own high-end devices, including the Soul, F480, and the launch of the M800," said a spokesperson for IDC.
Samsung has just released the F480, a touchscreen handset, in India, which is one of the fastest-growing emerging markets in the world.
The phone boasts a five-megapixel autofocus camera, 'drag and drop' technology, a music player and 240 MB of internal memory.
