Japanese technology giant Sony could launch a PlayStation-branded handset without its mobile phone partner Ericsson, it has emerged.
While rumours of a mobile device incorporating Sony's popular games console have been circulating for a while, several industry sources are now speculating that the firm will eventually release the product without Ericsson.
According to Marketing Week, relations between executives at the two companies have recently turned "frosty", with one insider claiming that Sony feels it made a "strategic error" by using its Walkman brand for Sony Ericsson phones.
The publication reports that the Tokyo-based firm is currently converting technology from its PlayStation Portable console into a mobile format, with a view to launch the device in time for Christmas 2009.
Headquartered in London, Sony Ericsson was established in 2001 when Sony joined forces with the Swedish telecoms company. As well as Walkman, the partnership has released phones based on Sony's camera brand Cyber-shot.
