Mobile phone network 3 is to make major changes to its tariff rates as it tries to bolster its market share.
The operator aims that by overhauling its tariffs, which will include asking the customer to pay some of the fee for the handset, it will become more competitive at the higher end of the market.
After cutting its acquisition costs by 43 per cent in the last six months, 3's next marketing move will be to start new deals from £15 per month, with no phone included. Customers will then be asked to pay £2 per month extra for a basic phone or a total of £25 per month for a top of the range model, Mobile Today reports.
Julien Parven, of 3's distributor Fone Logistics, said: "I think it's a reasonable idea. This is starting to put some value back into the handset. The idea of £300 handsets being given away is ridiculous."
Next week, 3 will launch a new high speed mobile internet service called 3Turbo. It will offer fast mobile broadband connections on its handsets from £10 per month.
