Network provider T-Mobile's promise to significantly reduce EU data roaming rates has been welcomed by regulator Ofcom.
The firm announced last week that it will slash roaming charges by 80 per cent from July 1st and also plans to introduce a 38 per cent cut in the cost of sending SMS messages from EU nations later this year.
Voicing approval for T-Mobile's move, Ofcom chief executive Ed Richards said that "consumers will benefit from this decision as the summer holiday season begins".
He added: "This is an important first step towards ensuring that mobile operators introduce fair and transparent pricing for all consumers while abroad."
Mobile operators have been under pressure from EU commissioner Viviane Reding to reduce prices for text messages and data access in Europe.
Under T-Mobile's new tariff, data charges will fall from £7.50 per megabyte to £1.50 per megabyte, with the cost of sending an SMS dropping from 40 pence to 25 pence.
