Cisco invests in Femtocell technology

By Editorial Team (Wednesday, 23rd January 2008)

Further investment has been made in femtocell technology, a home-working system that can be used as a mobile phone base, allowing customers to use their broadband line to make free calls.

Internet networking group Cisco has invested in ip.access which is developing the product and has already received funding from Intel.

It is thought that the femtocell technology could help mobile companies as it uses mobile phone features to aid compatibility within the home, as broadband television programmes can be downloaded automatically to mobiles.

Google has made an investment in rival firm Ubiquisys, whose founder Will Franks told the Guardian: "The box knows you're at home and could load the programmes you have missed on to your phone overnight."

The "box" will be a paperback sized station, which has already caught the attention of Vodafone and Softel. Both companies announced in 2007 that they would be trialling the product.
