An £11,000 phone bill could lead to changes in policy surrounding mobile broadband downloads, as Ofcom investigate the case of an anonymous pair and some sitcom episodes.
The wife of an executive used her husband's mobile phone to download four episodes of Friends, which finished downloading after his plane landed in Germany, leading to extra fees for use abroad amounting to £11,000.
It is reported that the businessman would have been able to download the episodes for free in Britain, as part of his unlimited download package from Vodafone but he boarded the plane as the downloads were taking place.
Chief executive of industry watchdog Ofcom Ed Richards confirmed: "We will be looking to take action."
The news highlights the need to check the policies of mobile phone operators when looking for the best deal, although Vodafone said it does contact customers who may have unwittingly exceeded their inclusive download limit.
Earlier in the year, Vodafone revealed its enhanced mobile broadband service, which operates under a £15 per month flat rate.
