Mobile phone users could benefit from the announcement that Orange and Vodafone are to work together a move that has been clarified by the two companies.
The move will include a reduction in mobile masts as Orange and Vodafone will start to share the sites later this year.
Chief executive of Orange UK Tom Alexander commented on the plans, saying: "It will be better for our customers, better for our businesses and better for the environment."
Sharing mast sites is expected to improve signal, and will reduce the number of sites needed by 15 per cent within two years.
Both companies will retain separate networks and have announced that despite the initiative, they remain competitors in the mobile market.
Vodafone has appointed a Group Board to look at electromagentic fields. The board will deal with public concerns and establish strategic goals.
It has also launched a global survey into the links between mobile phones, phone masts and health as part of the Vodafone annual corporate responsibility report.
