Vodafone attacks proposed received call charges

By Editorial Team (Monday, 1st September 2008)

Vodafone has struck out at proposals by the European commissioner for telecoms Viviane Reding to introduce charges for receiving calls as is seen in the US.

Ms Reding's plan is hoped to help operators cope with reductions to the charges levied at consumers who need to connect to another network, reports the Financial Times.

However, a study conducted by Vodafone found that among 9,000 mobile users polled, there was a great deal of resistance to the idea that the US-style charges be introduced in the UK.

Vodafone said: "Our research leads us to conclude that around 40 million European mobile users would be forced to cancel their mobile service if Europe moved to a US wholesale model."

A spokesman for Ms Reding stated that Vodafone's claims were "unfounded".

In related news, Vodafone announced earlier this year that it intended to increase its number of high street stores in the UK to 400. The first high street locations to see a new store will be Bristol and London.
