Vodafone's 11 million pay-as-you-go customers will see their bills rise by as much as third in September, it has been announced.
The cost of a call will increase from 15p to 20p a minute. Contract customers who exceed their monthly limits will see their call costs rise by 3p a minute. In addition, 0871 and 0870 numbers are both going up by 5p.
Critics of the tariff changes say the EU's ruling on roaming charges is behind Vodafone's decision.
The UK's second-biggest mobile operator denied the price hikes were only down to the cost of European regulation, arguing that it has not increased charges for about two years.
Last month, T-Mobile raised its pre-paid minimum call charge from 10p to between 15p and 25p, while O2 raised the minimum call charge for some pay-as-you-go customers.
Vodafone claims to be the world's leading international mobile communications company, with around 269 million customers.
