Our Review of the Apple iPhone 3G 16GB
The iPhone 3G is a revolutionary widescreen iPod music player, mobile phone and mini-computer in one, with rich HTML email and full web browsing. Scrolling through web pages on the new iPhone is as good as ever, if not better, thanks to the improved speeds.
Whilst the hype surrounding the original iPhone might not have equally translated into sales, it can't be denied that the arrival of Steve Jobs and the boys revolutionised the mobile phone market – in the 12 months since the launch of the iPhone, we've seen numerous high powered smartphones, such as LG's Viewty and Samsung's Omnia and Tocco, all complete with touchscreen interfaces and multimedia features being touted as 'iPhone killers'.
Revolutionary or not, the two main points of contention with would-be first-gen iPhone customers was the lack of 3G support and the cost – Apple have responded to these criticisms by including high-speed 3G access this time round, and significantly reducing the asking price of the handset. Like its predecessor, this new 3G version is a revolutionary phone, widescreen iPod music player and mini-computer in one, with rich HTML email and full web browsing. Scrolling through web pages on the new iPhone is as good as ever, if not better, thanks to the improved speeds.
As a telephone, the iPhone is a dream to use. Scroll through your telephone numbers using the touch screen, or if you have lots of contacts use the search facility – a feature which is a vast improvement from the original. Three way conversations are also easy – you just flick from one to another using the large screen, or create a conference call. The visual voicemail facility also lets you prioritise your voice messages, so you can listen to the most important ones first.
Rich HTML Email on the phone looks just like email on your computer, so images appear alongside texts. Attachments are no longer pared-down versions of the original. You can rotate, zoom and pan in more than a dozen standard file and image formats, including PDF, Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The iPhone features Safari, the standard web browser on Macs, and the most advanced on any phone, and will connect you to EDGE, 3G and Wi-Fi. SMS conversations appear as an ongoing chat, so you can easily follow the thread of your texts, and the multi-touch QWERTY keyboard allows makes for quick and easy typing, although, annoyingly, there still is no option for turning predictive typing off, nor can you forward messages or delete individual messages from a conversation thread, which means that your inbox gets filled up pretty darn quick!
Email support has been vastly improved; sending and receiving emails on the new 3G iPhone is as slick as anything else out there.
Email support has been vastly improved, and of course, with 3G HSDPA fully loaded, sending and receiving emails on the new 3G iPhone is as slick as anything else out there; Apple clearly have their eye on BlackBerry's slice of the PDA market. Push email support is included, and - amazingly - there's also support for MS Exchange. Basic functions that were missing from the first iPhone, such as the ability to delete old emails en masse, have now been included.
With its 3.5-inch widescreen display and multi-touch controls, the iPhone doubles up as an iPod, enabling you to watch videos, listen to music and sync it all to your iTunes. Another great feature of the iPhone is its mobile maps – GPS tells you exactly where you are, and how to get to where you're going. It even points out places of interest on the way. If you search for "Chinese" it will show you every Chinese restaurant in the area.
Sadly, the one downside to the 3G iPhone is that it inherits one of the weaknesses of its predecessor, in the form of a 2 Megapixel camera. Whilst Apple declare this iPhone to be "the most photo friendly phone ever", rival Smartphones, such last year's Nokia N95, win hands down on picture quality.

The iPhone is literally one of the most beautiful pieces of technology I've ever seen, you just want to hold it and touch it all the time, without appearing to be weird. I've downloaded a few games for it, and it's incredibly good at playing games. Super Monkey Ball, which uses the accelerometer, is probably the most fun, though it's a bit weird to be able to move the iPhone and have it recognise that you're doing so.
On the kind of more bland side, making and receiving calls is all fine, and the one thing that you'll have to watch out for is the easily dirtied screen.

I was a Blackberry user until the iPhone 3G came along, and they finally got the specs right for business. Microsoft exchange is available, and it's great for email and organising your life all in one device. It's also pretty well supported by Apple, as they've done a couple of software updates since I've had the phone, though to be fair I'm not entirely sure what they've changed/improved, but it's nice to know that they look after their customers. The iPhone is very easy to recommend, and not just to the ultra-trendy people who'll use it as a fashion accessory, as it's very feature rich and adaptable.

The iPhone 3G is the first really good phone I've ever owned, and I reckon that it actually lives up to all the hype, especially in terms of internet performance. I've watched a few videos on YouTube and it's really quite quick for a mobile, in terms of downloading things as well. At the moment though I don't think it can (or I haven't worked out how to) send picture messages, which is a bit annoying, but not the end of the world.

This is a bit of a must have phone, and probably my favourite thing about it is the really massive screen. You can watch full movies on it without having to squint or lose too much of the experience, and of course because it's an Apple it's got good software for organising all my music and videos. The thing that's really a bit of an issue for me is the camera, which is average and not up to scratch. My brother's N96 has a much better camera even if it doesn't have touch screen, but the iPhone isn't trying to be a camera phone. Other than that it's ace.

Got the iPhone today and it's a weighty, expensive looking and feeling piece of kit, but it is on the large side so some people might be put off and go for a slimmer handset. But it's big because it's got so much stuffed into it, so you can't complain. I'm not bothered about the hyped up 3G connection but I suppose it's useful if you need it, and I got mine on pay as you go, which includes free internet.

I use iTunes on my iPhone 3G now more than I did on my laptop, and I've downloaded quite a few songs directly to it, which saves messing about with cables and the like. Also, I use the Wi-Fi connection to get on the internet, which I think quite a few people don't know about, and it saves you using up your monthly data allowance on your contract, and it can be good if you don't live in a 3G area, like myself.

I had an LG Viewty which was a pretty good touch screen phone, but I got an iPhone as a kind of upgrade, and it's literally another league. I use it mostly as a replacement for my iPod and obviously for calls and a little bit of web browsing, and to be fair it excels in everything I've used it for. However, it does get greasy quickly.

I've had the iPhone 3G since it came out and it's the best phone I've ever used for browsing the internet. Zooming in and looking at web pages is easy, and you can do a kind of pinching action that makes you feel like you're in Minority Report, and the screen is huge and clear. Pretty much everything you could possibly want from a phone and PDA all in one package. Very impressive and easy to recommend.

I love the iPhone! The touch screen is so cool, everything in all the menus flies about with pretty colours, and it's really easy to use, and because I've got the one with loads of storage I don't have to lug an iPod around with me as well, because all of my music just synced up using iTunes. So many people use iPods that having an iPhone is a simple and sensible step to take. Can't say I've used it for watching videos so I don't know what the battery life is like if you're planning on using it for that, and I don't really use mobile internet, but I think it's pretty quick. I did download an app called iBeer which was awesome though, because it let you use the iPhone to pretend to drink a virtual pint, the iPhone works a bit like a Wii controller I think…or something. Anyway, the Apps are cool.

Been a big fan of Apple technology products for a while, I've got a Macbook and I've had an iPod as well, and it's all very user friendly and intuitive, which is something that is true of the iPhone 3G also. The touch screen is probably the best in the market, and I had a look at a friend's Samsung touchscreen phone and it was slow and unresponsive compared to the iPhone. It does take a bit of getting used to when typing texts or emails, but once you've got the hang of it it's fine.

The best thing about the iPhone for me is the Home screen with all the little customisable widgets and applications that you can change up to your own desires. Personally I have iPod, call and text functions all ready and waiting, but if you want you can have websites or whatever else you use most frequently, and it's simple to set up.

This is my first experience with an Apple product - and I'm not disappointed! The phone looks lovely and is a pleasure to hold, the menus work really smoothly and it's got more features than all my family's phones put together! Battery life seems good as I haven't had to charge mine yet, and works perfectly with iTunes for music and podcasts. Very pleased!

I was one of the many people who queued up to get the original iPhone when it came out, and I queued up again for the iPhone 3G. Why? Because Apple products are some of the best designed pieces of kit you'll ever have to use, and because all of the features that Apple thinks of first everyone is then trying to replicate, but it's the original that's always the best. I've used the GPS and 3G internet connection to find out about restaurants and hotels in foreign cities, and the App store is great because you can easily get applications that are useful. It's also a little bit full of apps that are rubbish, but if you look online you can sort through them, and there's loads of user support. All in all a great phone, and I think they're having a price cut on them at the moment.
