Our Review of the Apple iPhone 8GB

The original iPhone, possibly the most anticipated product launch in mobile phone history, was officially termed "technology's worst kept secret," and it revolutionised the smartphone market. How many phones are you going to see this year which will feature interactive touchscreen menus, featuring fully integrated music and video playback and online browsing?

You can literally take a spin through your record collection – run your finger over the touchscreen and watch those album sleeves move.

The iPhone upon its release was criticised for its lack of 3G support – firmware updates have seen EDGE compatibility negate this issue somewhat – and for its 2 Megapixel camera which is pretty old hat compared to the 5 Megapixel beasts which are the benchmark of dedicated cameraphones these days.

That said, pictures taken on the original iPhone do look pretty impressive on the huge 3.5" touchscreen display, and, of course, the on-board accelerometer means that you can tilt your iPhone ninety degrees and the picture display will orient itself to either portrait or landscape depending on what angle you're holding it at. You can also zoom in and out of pictures thanks to the unique 'pull and pinch' technique – this is sensitive to the slightest of movements, and has to be seen to be believed.

Internet browsing on the iPhone also isn't as bad as the naysayers would have you think. Although it's not going to be as good as the just released 3G version, scrolling through web pages (which again can be viewed in either a portrait or landscape format thanks to the tilting mechanism) on the large TFT-coated touchscreen is a breeze. Until the iPhone came out, browsing on mobile phones has always been a bit of a shaky affair, due to the small screen size – viewing web pages on mobile phones used to be like squinting into a large room through a keyhole. Now thanks to the large screen and the pull and pinch action, you can get the full picture.

Integrated iTunes support is flawless, meaning you can browse, buy online and listen to tracks all through one device – arguably, it is this feature which is the main USP of the iPhone. You can also literally take a spin through your virtual record collection easily by using the trademark zoetrope-esque CoverFlow – run your finger over the screen and watch those album sleeves move. Needless to say, audio quality is pin sharp perfect and crystal clear.

Scrolling through web pages on the large TFT-coated touchscreen is a joy.

Let's not forget about the phone aspect either – the iPhone boasts 8 hours of talk time and 250 stand by hours, although if you're using the iPod and picture applications frequently, expect to have to put your iPhone on charge a fair bit. Scrolling through your list of contacts is achieved by simply running your finger down the list, a la CoverFlow – the list which slides and moves accordingly, bouncing slightly when it hits the top or bottom. This unconventional approach has flummoxed some users, and it does take some getting used to, so be prepared for some fiddling when you first get started.

Another bone of contention with the iPhone upon its release was the admittedly hefty asking price. Now that the new 3G-enabled version of the iPhone has arrived, and going for considerably less than its predecessors, the original model is set to take a price tumble, making this an ideal choice for someone who wants a powerful, stylish music phone with iTunes support, but isnt really concerned about taking pictures or browsing the web at near broadband speeds.

The original 8GB iPhone, soon to be available on PAYG through O2 – watch this space.

 Pros

The Original iPhone.

Apple iPhone 8GB Review

Review by: zain from , 14th December 2008

The Apple iPhone is a very stylish phone. The fact that you can browse the internet is an asset and it is fairly reliable. However, for a phone with a meagre 2 megapixel camera it is over priced and it is outmatched by the Nokia N96 and maybe even the Nokia N95. It also has a fairly poor battery life and I needed to get a new battery within 3 months! Overall, I wouldn't recommend the iPhone to anyone and would instead recommend the iPhone 3G or the Nokia N96

No thanks!

Review by: fanta from England, 7th January 2008

Face it; the iPhone is as pointless as it is expensive. I don't doubt it makes an excellent addition to an Apple fanboy's ShinyWhite(tm) tool belt but for the rest of the planet it's pretty useless. Why?

First of all it's the pinnacle of everything I hate in a mobile phone - it's a bag of vaguely-useful yet terribly expensive applications in a portable device. The ability to make and receive calls is tacked on the end like an afterthought. I do not wish to have a phone that crashes when I'm on a call, or a phone that is so bloated with rubbish it hasn't got enough free memory to ring when someone phones me.

Another point I find incredulous is that Apple have prevented third-party applications from running on the handset. Developers aren't able to write *useful* applications for the device and consumers are stuck with the preloaded software. When asked, Apple explained it was for security and stability reasons. Well it crashes just fine on its own and 5th January saw the world's first trojan for the iPhone. Apple fanboys at this point will trumpet the iPhone's "full support for Web 2.0 applications from third party developers". Let me translate that for everyone - it has a web browser. Safari to be exact, and already its plagued with incompatibilies and security flaws.

Let's assume that none of this phases you yet, and you're willing to buy an iPhone for business use. Well I'm afraid you'll be a bit stuck. For starters you'll be seriously lacking the business-oriented features offered by BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, and if your IT Manager has anything to do with it you won't be sending or receiving e-mail either. It's just too insecure.

What else doesn't it do? 3G networks for one, a fairly major feature that the competition happily supports. The camera's resolution is low for today's standards - although lens quality and software compression is just as important, it seems they suck too. The battery isn't removable and this was a big thing when iPod batteries died after 12 months - I suspect we're about to see it all again. The screen is glass, don't drop it. It can't send MMS picture messages. It can't record video. It doesn't have GPS but that doesn't matter because no one could write applications for it anyway. You can't choose songs for your ringtone. No speed dial (genius that one). The iPhone gets very hot when its in use, like every other Apple product I've owned. Seriously the list is endless and I could write for days.

I'm not completely slating the iPhone. I'm not forced to use it and I gladly don't. The batteries don't explode in people's pockets, another bonus feature. And if your ShinyWhite(tm) tool belt is trembling with fury at this point all I can say is that potential consumers will talk with their feet. And they have. To buy Nokias.

IPhone

Review by: Steve T from Yorkshire, 7th January 2008

I don't know why so many people are knocking the iPhone just because it might not boast the best specifications around-look at the Nintendo Wii, which at a spec-for-spec comparison is nowhere near as powerful or sophisticated than the Xbox 360 or the new PlayStation, but it's outselling both platforms by a country mile. Why? Because it's so intuitive, easy to use, and above all, fun.

Same argument applies to the iPhone-it might not be as powerful as the N95 or the Viewty or whatever, but it makes up for this due to the fact that it is just such a great piece of technology to use. I've seen people in O2 shops just going in and being able to pick up an iPhone and play with it instantly without needing any customer assistance.

Similarly, after I bought mine, I've not once consulted the manual on how to make use of the functions as I?ve not needed to. Everything you need from a mobile device is quite literally at your fingertips.

I?m sure that in a few years time this version of the iPhone will be outclassed by a newer, more sophisticated version with a better camera and faster net access (I have to admit that the lack of 3G is a real pain), but I don't really see how Apple can improve on the interface, which is the real strength of the iPhone. Fundamentally, it'll pretty much remain unchanged.

Consider how rudimentary the original iPods are in comparison to models such as the new 80GB ones, but (with the obvious exception of the iPod Touch, which is essentially an iPhone sans a phone) one thing remains a constant-the click wheel.

You could buy a more powerful and this year, you won't buy one that's as user friendly or as immediately accessible.

iPhone Dilema

Review by: Andrew Benson from Manchester, 14th December 2007

I have just been down my local o2 shop to have a play with the iphone. Wow!! it is such a cool piece of kit!! Of course it doesn't have anywhere near as high spec as the Nokia N95 but what the iphone lacks in spec it gains in usability. Within 5 minutes I was working it (almost) as well as in the advert :) I think Im sold...Im going to get one.
