Overview Specifications
One of last year's most ubiquitous products, the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 still remains as one of the most popular PDA handsets currently available.

The Pearl is very stylish, PDA/phone hybrid, which has a neat slimline design (107 x 50 x 14.5 mm, 89.5g) somewhat more pocket-friendly than its wider counterparts, and contains entertainment features such as a camera and media player, that are absent from some of the other models.

The 1.3 megapixel camera with 5x digital zoom takes pictures which look pretty good on the high-res (240 x 320) 2.25" display, the brightness of which adjusts naturally thanks to the built-in ambient light sensor.

The music player is just as impressive, being able to play tracks in a variety of file formats: MP3, MIDI, AMR NB, and all AAC variations. It's just as well then, that the 8100 has 64MB of built in memory to handle all your photos and tracks, and it has the distinction of being the first BlackBerry to include a microSD slot for memory expansion.

Despite this, the main function of the Pearl – remote email access – remains intact and is as good as on any previous BlackBerry. The Pearl comes with GPRS and EDGE technology which provides the user with fast data transfers and downloads – emails arrive speedily and the user can connect their phone to any Bluetooth-compatible device for a wire free connection between two devices.

Most Blackberries have a full QWERTY keyboard; the Pearl saves space by using a modified 20-key type pad, with each key being shared by two characters – the intuitive T9 esque predictive text feature SureType is installed in order to help speed up typing, and is actually easier to use than standard mobile phone predictive text, as there are only two characters per key as opposed to the usual three, although some veteran BlackBerry users may find the narrower typepad restrictive. Menus are accessed via the circular thumbwheel – the titular 'Pearl' – which is ultra-responsive and positioned in the centre of the front fascia for ease of use.

The Pearl looks fantastic and is packed with great multi media features; RIM aimed to appeal to more creative and consumer-based market with the 8100, which went on to become the jewel in the BlackBerry crown in 2006.
