Overview Specifications
The BlackBerry, first introduced in 1999 has become a phenomenal success worldwide, allowing users to easily send and receive emails wherever, whenever. The 8700 model improves on the previous 7290 incarnation by featuring an ultra-sharp 2.4" display (240 x 320 screen resolution) with a powerful backlight which adjusts according to your surroundings thanks to the built-in ambient light reader.

For people who demand instant e-mail wherever they are the BlackBerry series has become an essential and the 8700 will certainly not disappoint. The type pad layout of the 8700 does not differ that much from the 7290 – the keys double up for symbol and numerical text inputs with the press of the ALT button – so previous users of the interface will feel right at home, but there are a few more extra keys and functions. For example, there is now a dedicated currency key, allowing you to set a $, £ or € symbol as the default character for that key.

The physical layout of the keys however is much more intuitive than the cobbled fan layout of before, as many users tend to type with one hand rather than two, leaving one hand free to hold the device and use the jogwheel – perfect for scrolling through a lengthy email – located on the right side of the device.

The 8700 also has 64MB of internal flash memory, plenty of space for storing emails, and comes with a USB port which can be used for the obvious cross-platform transmission of files, and as a port through which to charge the handset. At 70 x 110 x 19mm it's a fairly sizeable for something that weighs 134g.

Unfortunately there is no camera function, making the possibility of video calling out of the question, but the 8700 is capable of handling multimedia messaging and it can open attachments in e-mails, so whilst you can take any pictures of your own, you can still view images in attachments.
