LG struck a balance where the design of the phone was every bit as important as its features, a formula which has been relentlessly copied by phone designers and manufacturers ever since.
It is perhaps the LG KG800, or Chocolate as it is most commonly known, that is responsible for kicking off the fashion phone craze; sure Motorola's RAZR series grabbed headlines with its slimmer than size zero dimensions months before the KG800 was but a gleam in LG's eye, but it was the Chocolate which first symbolised mobile luxury. Arriving in 2006, the sumptuous Tri-Band Chocolate turned heads with its unique approach to phone design, the likes of which had never been seen before. LG struck a balance where the design of the phone was every bit as important as its features, a formula which has been relentlessly copied by phone designers and manufacturers ever since.
Since then, LG have gone on to pair up with Italian fashion institution Prada, and develop their acclaimed Black Label range of super-stylish smartphones; Korean rivals Samsung have worked with Armani, and Sony Ericsson installed a discreet OLED display into their Z610i which did not interrupt the smooth contours of the pink clamshell.
Even now, it's easy to see why the Chocolate had such an impact; the slide open handset boasts a streamlined black casing (also available in White chocolate or Turkish Delight Pink) endowed with glowing red sensitive menu navigation and call and cancel controls which respond to the slightest touch, and then fade to nothing when the handset is inactive, retreating invisibly into the chassis of the phone.
It's not just a pretty face; the Chocolate comes well equipped with a 2" display capable of reproducing images shot on the 1.3 Megapixel camera in 256K colours, and boasts a flash and 4 x digital zoom; getting pictures right in dimly lit conditions is not a problem. Though 1.3 Megapixels is well out of date by the standards of today, it's more of a novelty feature than a dedicated imaging solution - fine for snaps of friends and fun things, but if taking pictures isn't of major importance to you, then this is a moot point.
The Chocolate also comes with a music player, which can play files in the following formats MP3, ACC, ACC, ACC WMA - a pretty remarkable feat for a phone of its time. 128MB memory is included for saving and storing pics and tracks, and files can be easily transferred between phones and computer platforms either by USB or Bluetooth, although it ought to be noted that the version of Bluetooth on offer here is version 1.2.
It's easy to see why the Chocolate had such an impact; the slide open handset boasts a streamlined black casing endowed with glowing red sensitive controls responsive to the slightest touch.
The Chocolate is also more than equipped to handle most users mobile email demands - POP3 and SMTP protocols are catered for, and emails including attachments up to 300KB in size can be sent - not at all bad for a phone over 2 years old.
Unfortunately, the major shortcoming of the Chocolate is the lack of card slot for memory expansion, which is a bit of a downer considering all the other strong points of the phone, the great design, ease of use, decent email and audio file support. You are also unable to make playlists on the music player which again, perhaps is a hallmark of yesterday's consumer expectations in the mobile market.
However, as a phone, the Chocolate suffers from none of the battery issues that blight even some of the most cutting edge smartphones of today and can comfortably provide up to 6 hours of talk time along with 200 hours of time on standby.
The LG Chocolate has all the elements of a classic, modern design piece. Although it may not feature the wealth of options that more modern handsets provide, the Chocolate has an uncluttered and reliable quality which will still appeal to buyers. Due to the impact the Chocolate had upon its release, this model has acquired something of a 'retro' status and is a steal at some of the going prices.
