Our Review of the Motorola ROKR E8

The ROKR E8 boasts a cutting-edge context sensitive virtual keypad which shifts and changes depending on which of the multimedia functions you have active at the time.

Motorola have had mixed fortunes with handsets of late. While almost all of them feature some novel design ideas, they have been let down by clunky interface software and build quality issues. With this in mind they will be hoping that the cutting-edge design of the new Motorola ROKR E8 is a much needed hit. The ROKR E8 is designed primarily with entertainment in mind, and boasts a flat context sensitive virtual keypad which shifts and changes depending on which of the functions you have active at the time.

The virtual keys make use of Motorola's patented ModeShift technology, the handset transforms from music player to phone to imaging device at the touch of a button. Compatible with your PC, the pre-installed Windows Media Player 11 software allows you to store and arrange your music according to your needs – needless to say, support for WMA files is included, a feature, curiously absent from a lot of music phones

The ROKR E8 has some 2GB of internal memory built in that enables you to store up to 1500 songs and plenty of photos. A further 4GB can be added using the microSD card slot. Unfortunately, the camera weighs in at a mere 2 megapixels, which is fairly average, especially when you consider that today's measuring stick for mobile phone cameras seems to be around the 5 Megapixel mark. The 2 Megapixel camera has an 8 x optical zoom for surprisingly clear and precise photos, multi-shot photography, and video capture and playback. The exterior is a sleek panel featuring Motorola's first haptic touchpad which provides vibrating, tactile feedback when you touch the virtual buttons.

Most users will be satisfied with the ROKR E8's list of other features. For starters the handset is Quad Band and GPRS compatible. The E8 is also and EDGE compatible device but unfortunately there is no 3G capability. One novel feature is the voice readout function. If you receive a text and get interrupted by a call the E8 will recite the text in its mechanical tones, sounding like a bored HAL from 2001. It doesn't always work and sometimes it's downright irritating but it's a novel feature that shows some innovation which is lacking in more illustrious handsets. You can disable this from the menu, but what would you want to do that for, Dave?

In conclusion the ROKR E8 is an accomplished mid range handset. It is neither highly technical or all style and no substance. This could be the great strength of the E8 as it will appeal to a broad range of customers. It has enough memory to double as an MP3 player and the camera, although on the average side, will please a number of people.

 Pros

Excellent music software combined with 2GB of internal memory.

 Cons

Very average two megapixel camera.
