Our Review of the Motorola U9

The Motorola U9 is the successor to the old PEBL range of phones and the beleaguered US manufacturer will be hoping for a hit.

The Motorola U9 is the successor to the old PEBL range of phones and the beleaguered US manufacturer will be hoping for a hit. The U9 is a glistening clamshell just like its predecessor and it even has the same subtle curves and smooth feel. As you would expect when the U9 flips open it reveals a number of treats. The Motorola U9 has almost the same flat and recognisable keypad as the illustrious RAZR V3 and the more recent V8. The screen is colourful without being spectacular, but it is definitely bright enough for the job.

The U9 also has some interesting technical propositions to go alongside its good looks. As you would expect the U9 has the ubiquitous two megapixel camera, but as it doesn't pretend to be a high end camera phone then it is more than adequate for the job. There is also all the little touches that can make a mobile phone useful such as calendar, java games as well as an inbuilt media player that handles all the popular file formats, such as MP3. The U9 is also Quad band enabled with GPRS and EDGE connectivity, which is becoming increasingly popular in the UK thanks to extensive network upgrades. The Motorola U9 has some real innovations that could prove to be a sign of things to come, not just in mobile phones, but in all types of monitors. The secondary front screen on the U9 is not in fact a screen at all. The whole glossy exterior of the phone gives no hint of a secondary display. Which makes the image on the front look like it's floating beneath the plastic. This impressive touch is made even better when you close the phone whilst playing a track on the media player. The controls appear in this front display and it becomes touch sensitive. It looks like something from the most far fetched science fiction but the U9 is definitely rooted in fact. As it uses an upcoming technology called OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). OLED has been featured on mobile phones before (such as handfset from the Nokia Prism series, and the Sony Ericsson Z610i) and it is very much a cutting edge technology that will be very big in the near future.

The technology uses stacks of light emitting layers of polymers, which when meshed together can make extraordinarily thin displays. In the future this may mean that most surfaces that you can see and touch may have moving images on them, similar to the monitors in the movie Minority Report. Moving the brave new world aside for a moment, the Motorola U9 is a perfectly capable little phone that has its own charms. Whether you pick the phone or not entirely depends what style of mobile phone you tend to go for. Those who like their phones small and fashion conscious may have found the ideal match.

 Pros

The U9 has a stylish clamshell design and handles the basics with aplomb.

 Cons

The U9 may be too basic for some.
