Our Review of the Motorola V3 Black

The Motorola V3, aka the RAZR, caused a storm in the wake of its release in 2005, and is still a popular choice in today's market, elevated to something of a 'classic design' status, thanks to a combination of a sharp design that seamlessly blends fashion and function.

Owing much to its namesake, the V3 is an incredibly thin, pocket-sized clamshell handset (53 x 98 x 13.9mm, 96g) forged from reflective aircraft grade aluminium alloy coatings on the interior numerical pads. The keypad itself has a beautiful metallic finish, and is lit from behind - the keys depress nicely, are suitably responsive and the pad is cut in a way which is both space-effective and stylish.

The TFT-enhanced main display screen is just as sharp, measuring 2.2", with a 265k colour display, and a resolution of 176 x 220, admittedly not the highest resolution available on the market, but display is still remarkable for such a compact handset, especially for one that is a couple of years old. The exterior colour screen has a resolution of 96 x 80 pixels, which is impressive for a small secondary display used for displaying the usual; (time, caller ID, signal strength, battery life etc). The audio quality is good, and it performs well in areas where signal is intermittent. The speakerphone distorts voices slightly, but this is to be expected.

Multimedia functions that come with the RAZR V3 include a then-cutting edge 0.3 Megapixel VGA 4x digital zoom camera with 5MB of memory, enough to store a handful of images. This goes to show just how quickly the mobile world has progressed in terms of cameraphones and miniaturisation. The fact that there is no microSD slot for memory expansion is also indicative of the rapid pace of change in the mobile market.

The RAZR also allows for a unique degree of customisation by allowing for MP3s of songs to be uploaded as ringtones, which can then be altered, mixed and generally messed around with using the unique MotoMixer system. So if you ever though the bass on 'Relax' by Frankie Goes to Hollywood needed to come forward just a little more, then MotoMixer can sort you out.

Again, the WAP 2.0 wireless Web browser looks dated compared to today's smartphones, although full support for POP3, SMTP, and IMAP4 email comes included. Bluetooth and USB are both included for full wireless and wired file transfer capability.

Despite the extra functions of the phone being outdated, the RAZR V3 is a classic handset, looks great, and has good battery life, and is an excellent choice for phone users to whom music and pictures are high up on the list of priorities.

 Pros

Defining slim phone design.
The handset that made the mobile phone a fashion accessory.

 Cons

Paltry amount of internal memory makes the media functionality redundant.
