Our Review of the Nokia 6288

The Nokia 6288 is an attractive slider with a contemporary, high-gloss finish available in black or white.

The Nokia 6288 is an attractive Tri-Band 3G slider with a contemporary minimalist, high-gloss finish available in either black or white. The 6288 is an updated version of the Nokia 6280 3G slide phone, and at first glance the two seem identical. However, in the 6288 Nokia have addressed issues such as the poor battery life and software hiccoughs that plagued its predecessor, and bundled this new version with amendments correcting these drawbacks along with some more memory to boot; the 6288 is bundled with a 512MB memory card, compared to the 64MB which came with the 6280 version.

As with many sliders, the large TFT display dominates the front panel and, at 320 x 240 pixels and 262K colours, it is more than adequate for surfing the web as well as viewing pictures or video footage shot on the 2 megapixel camera, located on the rear of the handset.

The Nokia 6288 was one of the first camera phones to prominently feature a camera lens on the rear of the phone positioned in the manner of a traditional camera; the camera can be used when the phone is held in a landscape orientation, giving the 6288 a much more intuitive picture taking experience. The 2 megapixeler comes with a powerful LED flash and a digital zoom for taking close-ups in all environments, and there is a second VGA camera located on the front for 3G video calling.

The 6288 comes with EDGE, GPRS and HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit-Switched Data). We don't usually see HSCSD on phones much these days, as it has been superseded by the faster HSDPA on pretty much every smartphone there is out there. The 6288 supports most of the features found on a smartphone, but uses a more old school Series 40 OS rather than Symbian, which makes for easier navigation for those moving on from older handsets.

The 6288 kicks out a top 3G download speed of 384Kbps, and browsing feels suitably unclaustrophobic on the 2.2" display. Navigation is handled by the traditional Nokia keypad set up, i.e. the 5-way direction key, and four context sensitive buttons.

Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP makes an appearance for fast wireless data transfer between platforms, as does Infra-Red, something else you don't really see mobiles these days. As the 6288 is of the older school of smartphones, it is of the generation before Nokia decided to do away with their Pop-Port USB sockets and include mini USB sockets like everybody else. The games included are 3D Rally and Golf, which are pretty good fun, but why oh why have Nokia decided to make Snake 3D? If it ain't broke don't fix it the old maxim goes, and there was nothing wrong with Snake II, it didn't need improving… Fortunately you can download new games onto the 6288, and so if you're after a two dimensional serpentine fix, then you'll probably be able to find it online.
The 6288 also comes equipped with a decent music player, and whilst the Sony Ericsson Walkman phones have the edge in terms of style, the stereo music player to be found here is a decent alternative. Compatible with MP3, MP4, AAC and eAAC+ formats (but not WMA) it also comes with an FM radio. You can keep a decent number of tracks on the 512MB data card included with the phone, or purchase a microSD card of up to 2MB for optimal storage.

Battery life, although better than that of the 6280 is still not brilliant, and whilst you get around 4 hours of talk time and 280 hours of standby, you'll want to charge it up once a day just to be on the safe side. The slide opening mechanism, whilst solid, feels deceptively light and doesn't inspire much confidence.

With a straightforward design and some features which are pretty benchmark by today's standards, the 6288 won't turn many heads, but it is, where available, going for stupidly cheap prices.

this is a good phone but i just wish they would sort out the reliability, i've had 4 as a result of my contract and they have all broken i'm about to give up and change phone to one which actually has some reliability.
