The Nokia 7900 Prism boasts a unique design which will undoubtedly turn heads. However, the excellent music player is let down by the lack of a card slot for memory expansion.

The first thing that you'll notice is the futuristic 16 million colour OLED display which does not require any form of backlight, and therefore does not consume so much battery power.
The Nokia 7900 Prism has kept the unusual crystalline science fiction type design of its predecessor the 7500 Prism, but that is about the only thing they share. At a first glance the differences between the two is not particularly apparent, however the 7900 Prism has been tricked out with a full internal overhaul, whilst retaining the same unusual keypad layout and angular feel.
When you switch on the Nokia 7900 Prism, the first thing that you'll notice is the futuristic 16 million colour OLED display. OLED (which stands for organic light emitting diode, acronym fans) screens are distinct from other display types in mobile phones in that they do not require any form of backlight in order to function; therefore they draw far less power, leaving the battery free to be used for other commands and functions. This alone makes the 7900 unique amongst mobile phones. Did we also mention the hypnotic swirling wallpaper backgrounds and configurable backlighting display?
Unfortunately, the lack of a backlit screen has one major drawback; whilst indoors this display is incredibly sharp and detailed, it has to be said that it's not quite so hot when you are out in the sun – all too rare here in the UK I know, but the difference really is noticeable on a bright day.
The keypad on the Nokia 7900 Prism is something that may divide users. On the one hand the unusual styling will draw praise but usability is an issue; the flat, hard surface of the keypad often leads to you missing a button while texting. It is something that you can get used to, but in the short term it is frustrating. On the other hand the D-pad in the middle of the 7900 is effortlessly straightforward to use, along with the context sensitive buttons surrounding it. This contrast however causes several problems with usability.
The 7900 Prism has an internal MP3 player that also supports MIDI, AAC, AAC+ and WMA file formats. It works rather well and it has a variety of customizable themes that you could change according to your mood and track storage is handled by the 1GB of internal memory. A video player is also available for when you get bored of your music but unfortunately there is no FM Radio, nor is there a card slot for memory expansion.
The Nokia 7900 Prism also features the now-standard 2 Megapixel camera. You get the usual options with it such as white balance and it does have a flash. But the main downside is that the 7900 Prism does not have a lens cover so the camera is very prone to scratches. It seems like a bit of an obvious oversight on Nokia's part and it maybe a source of irritation once you have had this mobile phone for a few months.
The 7900 performs well and will complete most tasks adequately but it lacks real technical edge. So whether to purchase the 7900 Prism or not really comes down to a question of style or substance, and this mobile phone certainly has the style.
The 7900 Prism has some very original styling and 3G compatibility.
Great music player.
The keypad really is a bit like Marmite - you'll love it or hate it.
No memory card slot.
The Nokia 7900 Prism boasts a unique design which will undoubtedly turn heads. However, the excellent music player is let down by the lack of a card slot for memory expansion.
