The Nokia E51 is one of the more popular additions to Nokia's E series of handsets designed with business users in mind. First announced in September 2007, the E51 comes in a classic slimline candybar chassis, available in either silver or black, which manages to be streamlined and elegant without being showy or extravagant. Build quality of the E51 is good; this is as solid as any other handset you are likely to come across and even rivals the good old Nokia 3310 in terms of near indestructibility.
In reality the exterior design of the E51 isnt exactly a stone's throw away from its predecessor the Nokia E50. Fortunately, Nokia have managed to imbue the E51 with a number of features which raises its profile above that of its ancestor, and is slightly slimmer to boot.
The keys come with enhanced tactile feedback, which makes for fewer mistakes when typing out emails on the numeric pad.
The E51 functions primarily as a mobile email device, and whilst it may lack the QWERTYness of a BlackBerry, it still performs its role admirably – typing out emails on the numeric keypad is no different than typing out a lengthy text message. The keys come enhanced with tactile feedback, and are slightly elevated from the rest of the keys on the phone, making for a genuinely enjoyable typing experience – rarely do you accidentally make a typo due to pressing the wrong key. Email support is comprehensive with support for POP3, IMAP4, and SMTP, and attachment viewers for all main file formats (that's Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat PDF's). A flashing LED light has been built into the handset which notifies you of new messages.
Despite the TFT enhanced screen measuring some 2.0" across (smaller than your average smartphone these days) emails and documents are clearly legible and not unattractive to look at – the display resolution is 240 x 320 pixels, and the E51 is capable of producing images in over 16 million colours.
The Nokia E51 is a 3G handset with HSDPA support, meaning that emails can come thick and fast when they need to, so you'll always be able to respond to and action emails ASAP. The E51 comes with 130MB of onboard system memory, which can be further expanded by some 8GB by way of a trusty little microSD card. This should provide more than enough storage for your emails, documents, pictures and audio files should you want to upload some pics and tracks.
The Nokia E51 is a 3G handset with HSDPA support, meaning that you'll always be able to respond to emails as quickly as possible.
The music player supports the major formats (MP3, AAC, eAAC+, and WMA) and audio playback quality is pretty good – surprisingly good bearing in mind that the primary function of the E51 is remote email access and not audio playback.
It's something of a shame then, that the same cannot be said of the 2 Megapixel camera, which even in Q3 2007 was old news. Whilst it’s adequate for taking pictures be warned that the quality isn't mindblowing and if you priorities pictures over emails, then you might want to look elsewhere.
By the same token, if you're not so bothered about imaging solutions in a mobile phone (or want a separate cameraphone) and want fast, dedicated mobile email access, then you could do worse than getting an E51 – unbelievably, they're available for free on some seriously cheap tariffs these days, at the fraction of a cost of a fresh off the press recently smartphone which pretty much does the same thing only with nicer pictures.
HSDPA compatibility makes for fast email response time.
Slick, neat design.
Average camera.
